Encouraging youngsters and adults to enjoy sport has led to an athletics coach from Warwick being honoured for his work.
Mick Aston, of Beaufell Close, was nominated for the a civic award by Warwick District Council’s audit and risk manager Richard Barr for his contribution to Leamington Cycling and Athletics Club.
Mr Barr, whose daughter Faye is trained by Mr Aston, said: “Mick is amazing - he encourages the kids no matter their levels of talent.
“He always makes time for people.
“His enthusiasm is infectious and helps to foster an excellent atmosphere.
“He puts in a lot of hard work and time even though his own children no longer train at the club.”
Mr Aston became a member of the club in Emscote Road when his daughter Cheryl began training as a runner nine years ago.
The 51-year-old started by officiating events, but became interested in long distance running and gained his coaching badge within a few years of taking up the sport.
And despite his dedication, the father of two feels he gets as much from the club as he puts into it.
Mr Aston said: “I get a real buzz from it.
“It’s great enjoyment and I get good feedback from parents and youngsters.”
Mr Aston specialises in teaching endurance running but he takes part in various other sports such as the pole vault, 400m hurdles and the hammer.
He is also team manager for the West Midlands young athletes cross country team.
He said: “You name it, I’ve done it.
“That way the kids can’t say they can’t do it if I can.”
To show its appreciation for Mr Aston, the club’s committee asked him to take the stage at an awards night in Cubbington on April 25 and present the honour which he received on April 10.
He said: “Getting the award was pleasing and embarrassing at the same time.
“I was shocked, and honoured that somebody had put me forward. A lot of people at the club do as much as me - they are fantastic.”
