Samantha Thompson went shopping at the Warwick branch of Sainsbury's on Wednesday and parked near the front door in a reserved 'parent and child berth'.

After shopping she began to pull out, but was stopped by an elderly gentleman. He had parked in the next bay with his family – including a baby.

Mrs Thompson said: "He was angry that I had parked in that spot, and read the sign to me. I thought as I was sitting down, he had not seen my rather large belly.

"So, I got out the car to explain that the reason why I was in the space. He said that it was not acceptable and that you needed a pushchair to park in the spot."

She added: "As a heavily pregnant woman, I feel fragile and felt quite threatened by this gentleman. I was shocked that he continued to tell me off, despite being obviously pregnant."

A representative from Sainsbury's Careline confirmed the spaces were for the of people with small children - and pregnant women.

Sainsbury's said that they would consider changing their signs to reflect pregnant women are welcome to park in the specialist spaces.

Tesco - the other supermarket in the town – have stick people on their family parking spots which sports a pregnant women.

They also issue parking permits to families with a pregnant women or young children.
