Review: Beauchamp Sinfonietta, Leamington town hall, November 15.
In a year recognising Haydn's death and celebrating Mendelssohn's birth, Beauchamp Sinfonietta chose to focus on Haydn and the delights and surprises contained in almost every one of his works.
His Drumroll Symphony No 103 in E flat major, his penultimate symphony, shows the composer's invention, experimentation and wit.
The Sinfonietta's hand-picked musicians include the frequently recommended wind section with Emma Williams, oboe, and Sue Shields, clarinet, making their marks in Respighi's The Birds. Piccolo, horns and flutes took turns to echo the celesta in the last part, Il cucù.
Their string section, too, is one of the best in the area. Doubling up as conductor and soloist, Nic Fallowfield emerged as a compelling artist playing Haydn's Violin Concerto No 1 in C major. Glowing interpretive sincerity and genuine warmth was warmly appreciated.

Verdict: Good start to season
