Steve Beaton went out in the last 16 of the 2010 totesport.com Players Championship Finals, held at The Circus Tavern in Purfleet at the weekend.
Beaton made a superb start to his first-round match against Tony Eccles, winning the first five legs of the contest.

The world number 29 then managed a brief revival, taking the next two legs, before the Beaton killed off the game with a 74 checkout.

Eccles said: "Steve's finishing was superb with checkouts of 76,88 and 74. I was on the back foot throughout the game and Steve didn't give me any chances".

The 6-2 win set up a second-round game against Paul Nicholson, who had beaten Dennis Priestley in his opening game.

Unfortunately, Beaton became the second former world champion to fall victim to Nicholson, losing 8-5.

"I was very disappointed," said Beaton. "It was a great game, but I couldn't get into my rhythm."

Nicholson produced a major shock by going on to lift the title, beating Adrian Lewis and Phil Taylor on his way to a 13-11 final success over Mervyn King.
