Richard Harper produced the fastest time on recent record to win the Two Castles 10k for the second successive year.
The 21-year-old Leamington C&AC athlete and Loughborough University student also won the Warwickshire senior title as, for the first time, the county road championships were incorporated into the race from Warwick to Kenilworth.

Harper sprinted in
to Kenilworth Castle grounds, at the last minute dodging through lead cars including the police safety vehicle, to cross the line in a superb 33min 4sec.

It was almost a minute faster than his winning time of 2008 and quicker than anything achieved on the records going back to 2002.

Hywel Davies of Rugby & Northampton won an exciting three-way battle for second place with Warwickshire silver medallist Emerson Combstock (Coventry Godiva) and Michael Beckett, formerly with Southampton and now based in Leamington.

That trio got away from 17-year-old Jack Mee as the course reached the residential part of Kenilworth, but his fifth place in 34.32 was good enough for the Warwickshire senior bronze medal and the county under-20 title.

Warwick University student Luke Lambourne, a member of Brighton AC, outsprinted Hinckley veteran Richard Whitelegg for sixth, with Philip Gould the first of the Kenilworth Runners athletes home in eighth.

Stuart Mead took ninth place for Spa Striders, with Phil McCorquodale the second under-20 in tenth place for Kenilworth.

Adrian Smith, another of the junior prospects at Edmondscote, won a sprint finish with Kenilworth's Martin Dorrill to finish 11th in a highly promising time of 36.37.

Leamington also provided the female champion, Monica William-son, who held off Wendy Daniels from Kenilworth by just five seconds after a lengthy struggle, with Kate Wright of Stratford AC third a further half minute back.

Jenny Jeeves won the women's 35-45 prize for the C&AC and also picked up the Warwickshire bronze.

Unattached runner Natalie Turnbull won the junior women's prize, finishing in 43.52, while Faye Barr took the Warwickshire under-20 gold, with C & AC clubmate Katie Taylor, in her first 10k, second.

Leamington also won a team double - gold in both the men's and women's races. The men had six athletes - Harper, Mee, Smith, Jamie Langley, Matthew Butler and Simon Kinson - in the top 23.

The lead six in the female team were Monica Williamson, Jenny Jeeves, Zara Blower, Faye Barr, Susie Tawney and Katie Taylor.

Esther Wollaston was the first of the Spa Striders women home in 45.51 with Michelle Clements a couple of seconds behind.
