Top performance from Avenue's ladies sees them into the last 16

Avenue's ladies are through to the last 16 of the National Top Club competition after a four-shot win over Wootton Bassett at the neutral green of Chipping Campden.

The 13-shot margin of victory for skip Lisa Smith, Hannah Smith and Margaret Lawson in the triples proved to be the deciding factor.

Lynn Houghton won a close-fought singles 21-20, while Yvonne Pick and Bernadette O’Donnell lost the pairs 19-14 and Terry Taylor went down by the same scoreline in the fours to leave the match tied at 2-2.

The junior singles was an all-Avenue affair at the County Finals, with Adam Smith beating Matt Wordingham 21-4 in a one-sided encounter.

Avenue’s ladies were on top form in their three-rink triples match at Whitnash, winning 70-33.

The highest winning rink of Margaret Lawson (skip), Terry Taylor and Vera Booth were 9-1 up at five ends on their way to a 33-11 success.

This was closely followed by Yvonne Pick (skip), Bernadette O’Donnell and Sue Holmes who came out on top 24-6.

The other rink of Hazel Higgins (skip), Pat Harris and Fran Parker lost 16-13.

Avenue proved too strong for visitors Southam in their mixed friendly, coming out on top by 27 shots.

The highest winning rink of Bill Port (skip), Lynn Houghton, Richard Muir and David Deakin were tied 10-10 after ten ends but went on to claim a 34-13 victory.

Ron Walton (skip), Stewart Aitkin, Mark Pearl and Fran Parker fought back from 10-7 down at ten ends to win 22-14, while Mick Preedy (skip), Graham Parker, Terry Taylor and Keith Orme claimed a 22-16 success.

Phil Wadland (skip), Barry Connolly, Margaret Lawson and Mike Jacobs lost 15-14.

Lillington suffered an 80-68 loss at Highway in a four- rink match on Saturday.

The visitors had two winning rinks, with captain Malcolm Welch skipping Paul Wakem, Mike Calvert and John Buggins to an 11-shot success.

Their other winning rink was skipped by Keith Francis, who managed a six-shot victory.
