Former Leamington striker Jacob Blyth made his Football League debut for Burton Albion on Tuesday night just hours after signing on loan from Leicester City.

The 20-year-old, who scored 24 goals in 64 appearances for Brakes, joined Leicester City in the summer for a nominal fee, slotting straight into their development side.

A return of six goals in 11 games caught the eye of Burton manager Gary Rowett, who has signed Blyth until January 12.

Rowett said: “Jacob is a big, powerful boy and is top scorer for Leicester’s development squad this season.

“He’s someone who we’ve watched a few times now and we’ve got really good links with Leicester City.

“He’s someone who can play in a similar mould to Calvin Zola so it gives us that option up front.

“He’s a young lad but he’s played football at non-league level and scored goals all the way through.

“He’ll be hungry and we’re delighted to have him here.”

Blyth, who has been handed the number 24 shirt, came on for the final 12 minutes of Tuesday night’s League Two encounter against Aldershot but could not prevent the Brewers going down to a 1-0 defeat.

However, despite the reverse, Blyth tweeted: Great to get my first football league appearance tonight. Disappointed by the result but we go again on Saturday!”

Brakes boss Paul Holleran, who signed Blyth from Bedworth United in January 2010, said he was delighted to see his former frontman get a chance to prove himself after a meteoric rise through the non-league ranks.

“It’s fantastic for the young kid considering where he was 18 months ago and the fact he didn’t start playing until he was 15.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and everyone at Leamington is hoping he does really well.

“When you see a player like him, who you’ve got a great affinity with, come through, it’s great for everyone involved.”
