Goddard’s fine solo effort earns a point for never-say-die Leamington

Brakes boss Paul Holleran, who was without strike duo Stefan Moore and Danny Newton, also made a number of changes that saw the reintroduction of Stuart Pierpoint in defence and a midfield partnership of Jack Edwards and Jordan Goddard, with Jamie Tank and Joe Magunda dropping down to the bench.

Hyde twice led in a very open contest with Brakes falling behind in the 32nd minute when Connor Hughes cut in from the right and fired low into the bottom corner past new loan keeper Mats Morch.

Hughes had earlier drilled a shot against the post as Hyde carried the early momentum but Brakes worked their way back into the game and could have been back on level terms shortly before the break when Matt Dodd fired over the bar from six yards after Hyde keeper Billy O’Brien had done well to beat away a fierce drive from Aron Wint.

The second period started with Brakes on the front foot and they levelled in the 47th minute courtesy of a coolly taken Matt Dodd penalty, awarded after a James Fry cross was blocked by the raised arm of Luke Giverin.

Within three minutes, however, the Tigers had regained their advantage.

Hughes whipped in a cross from the left and Tank, who had been a half-time substitute for James Mace, could only divert the ball into his own net.

Brakes were not finished, though, and it was 2-2 in the 75th minutes.

Goddard tricked his way past three defenders to make his way just inside the box before steadying himself to slam an unerring finish into the bottom corner of the net.

Brakes were now looking the more likely winners, forcing a series of corners that O’Brien get the faintest of touches to deflect a Jack Edwards header just past the post.

Hyde, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the break and could have grabbed the three points when striker Tom Bentham dragged a shot wide of an open goal in the 90th minute a quick break from the host.

Brakes responded with a quick break in added time and O’Brien needed to tip over a strike from Lee Chilton that looked to be heading for the top corner.
