Kenilworth Town were held to a 2-2 draw by Midland Combination Division Two’s bottom-side Rugeley Rangers, but having trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining, manager Barry Shearsby was relieved to see his side escape with a point.

“In the first half we were very poor and totally deserved to go in 2-0 down after giving away two scrappy goals,” said Shearsby.

“A few harsh words and a change of system seemed to work in the second half with us playing better but not dominating.

“A point against the bottom club is not good but when you’re 2-0 down after 70 minutes and not playing well I will take it.”

Danny Bartle scored his first goal for the club to halve the deficit but Town had to wait until the 88th minutes to get back on level terms, Andy Felton showing great composure to net from the spot after a push.

Even then Town could still have snatched the three points, but Bartle pushed his shot wide when a pass to an unmarked team-mate would have been the better option.

Town face a tricky task tomorrow when they entertain second-placed Alcester Town.

 Kenilworth Town Ladies advanced into the third round of the County Cup after a 10-1 win at ten-man Warwick University.

Sloppy passing and poor finishing from Kenilworth prevented them stamping their authority on the game, but they eventually took the lead when Kim Dougherty converted a one-on-one.

Bonnie Mountford bundled the ball over the line to double the lead before the break and Town went on to dominate the second period as the students tired.

Mountford added five more goals to take her tally to six, with Tash Devis, Marni Sidhu and Becky Jones also on target.

The plucky students scored a deserved consultation from the spot with the last kick of the match.

 Kenilworth’s over-35s gained a comfortable 6-1 win over P&N thanks to hat-tricks from Gio Bucci and Paul Okey.

Former Coventry City midfielder Claus Jorgensen pulled one back from the spot for P&N.
