The visitors looked sharper early on and had a good chance from a free-kick as the Saints defence switched off.

It was Saints, however, who opened the scoring in the eighth minute with Michael Clough crossing low to captain Myles Jones, who squeezed the ball home just inside the post.

Saints got a second six minutes later when keeper Tom Leeson was unable to hold Jones’ fizzing drive, with Louis Bridges reacting quickest to prod home the rebound.

Saints began to dominate and Yeates’ cross to the far post was cleared for a corner before Pawel Tomczak could apply the finishing touch.

With Copsewood looking to break away, Quentin Townsend was booked for a foul on Michael Bowden and Saints almost got a third just before the interval as Leeson dropped the ball with Bridges inches away from putting it in.

Copsewood had the better of the second half but could not turn their superiority into goals.

Tom Cross comfortably saved an overhead kick from Connoll Farrell, who had another chance a few minutes later, only to shoot wide of the near post.

Dominik Alleyne then put an effort wide after the ball had bounced back off the bar and Cross saved a glancing header in added time.

On Saturday, Southam lost 4-3 at Stafford Town, who lifted themselves off the foot of Division One in the process.

There was not much to choose between the sides early on, but a defensive mistake, fine curled effort and a disputed penalty helped Stafford open up a 3-0 lead before Pawel Tomczak pulled a goal back two minutes before the break.

Oli Manoochehri replaced Elliott Powell at the interval and, after Callum Yeates had twice gone close, Tomczak turned provider to set up Manoochehri who brought Saints back into the match.

Against the run of play, Town increased their lead again in the 75th minute and the last word went to substitute Stephan Grudzinski, who got a third for Saints in added time.

Tomorrow, Saints entertain Uttoxeter Town (3pm).
