Whitnash flatten Dunlop to boost title chances

With just two points separating the top six in the Coventry Alliance Premier Division, Whitnash Town did their goal difference a power of good with a 7-1 thrashing of Dunlop.

Town manager Barry Shearsby admitted his side had been given a harder opening than they expected against the relegation-threatened visitors, but felt his side’s class told in the end.

“It was tougher than we thought in the first 20 minutes,” said Shearsby.

“They got back to 1-1 but we went right back up the other end and scored and that killed them off.

“From then on we totally dominated and we could have scored more.”

Kev McGarvey opened the scoring for Town, but stand-in keeper Luke Cole was forced to make a couple of saves before Dunlop deservedly levelled.

However, an own goal re-established Town’s advantage and further goals from Lewis Currell (2), Charlie Smith (2) and Ross Briscoe secured a comfortable win.

Whitnash face a test of their title credentials tomorrow when they travel to Kenilworth Wardens (2.15pm) and Shearsby is expecting a difficult afternoon.

“They’re a young side who play good football and it will be a tough test for us.”

Wardens go into the derby in confident mood after a 5-1 victory over Woodlands last Saturday.

Wardens went 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes, with Toby Dipper heading home a pinpoint James Butcher free-kick and Rich Powell also netting.

Woodlands halved the deficit in the 18th minute.

However, further goals from Dipper and Powell took the game away from them before Tom Shanley tapped in to make it five right on the final whistle.

Wardens’ reserves suffered a solitary-goal defeat to Khalsa in a lacklustre League Cup game.
