Warwickshire trio shine at worlds
Sarah-Jane Perry in action against Egyptian Heba El Torky.
The Warwick District trio of Sarah-Jane Perry (Kenilworth), Emma Beddoes and Leonie Holt (both Leamington) produced encouraging performances at the World Squash Championships in the Cayman Islands.
Perry started with a comfortable 11-3, 11-7, 11-3 win over Ashley DeGroot from Guyana, but then had to overcome determined resistance from talented Egyptian Heba El Torky, recovering from 5-1 down in the fourth to win 11-4, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 and qualify for the main draw.
After agonisingly bowing out in the qualifying rounds in Rotterdam in 2011, Perry was delighted to finally make the main event.
“Last year I was match ball up in the qualifying finals against El Sherbini, so it felt pretty good to get past another tough Egyptian this time,” said Perry.
Beddoes had a bye followed by an 11-4, 11-4, 11-6 victory of Nayelly Fernandez from Mexico.
In the main draw, Perry played sixth seed Jenny Duncalf (England), while Beddoes drew 14th seed Camille Serme (France).
Duncalf shaded the first game, but Perry stunned the crowd by levelling for the loss of just one point in the second.
Despite playing close to her best, Perry could not maintain the momentum against her more experienced opponent and eventually went down 11-9, 1-11, 11-5, 11-8.
Beddoes also crashed out in four after winning the second game, going down 11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 11-6.
Holt narrowly lost her first qualifying round match 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-4 in 57 minutes to Scotland’s Lisa Aitken.
