Leamington rack up ten tries in Bedworth romp

Leamington weathered a high-tempo start from the visitors before going on to construct a very commanding performance, scoring ten tries in the process.

Bedworth initially belied their lowly league position by making ground up the wing from the kick-off and their solid set of forwards had the home defence worried with a series a drives close to the tryline.

Sam Nunn finally came to Leamington’s rescue with a well-directed kick to touch.

After soaking up this early pressure, Leamington showed the first sign of their capabilities with a quickfire attack.

Scrum-half Gareth Shuttleworth sent a crisp pass out to Toby Bruce who raced upfield before linking with Nunn. The fly-half and Danny Ruyssevelt, combined at speed to get the ball to Ryan Byrne who forced his way upfield before being ushered into touch.

Soon after, the visitors found themselves under real pressure. Joe Walton fielded a long-range kick and used Bruce on his inside to get Spa back on the attack. The ball was whipped across field before falling into the hands of Gus Gillespie who spotted a gap in the visitors’ defence to race over.

The hosts increased their lead with a move started by Scott Peters’ direct run deep in the Bedworth 22. He found Aled Thomas and as the home defence closed in he produced the deftest of passes for hooker Danny Phillips on the burst, who crashed over. Toby Bruce added the conversion.

This was the start of a very productive spell for Leamington and Thomas began a break which ended with Ruyssevelt and Gillespie linking up to put Ryan Byrne over in the corner.

From the restart, Leamington were soon back on the attack, with Gillespie carving out an opening to race over. Bruce added the extras to gave his side a 24-point interval lead.

Already motoring, Leamington moved up a gear in the second period.

A break from Gareth Shuttleworth put his side in a good position and with his first touch of the game since coming on for the impressive Nunn, Dale Glover slipped a neat pass to Gillespie, who needed no further encouragement as he sprinted over the line. This time, Glover added the conversion.

The home side were once again entering a very productive period and when Matt Patching opened up the visitors’ defence, he found the tireless Byrne in support to claim his second try of the afternoon, with Glover adding the conversion.

Glover then charged down an attempted clearance to claim his first try of the afternoon, which he duly converted.

The afternoon soon got worse for Bedworth as Shuttleworth made another clever break before setting Craig Smith up for the opportunity to cap a sublime performance with a try.

Glover obliged with the conversion and Leamington had nudged the score over the 50-point mark.

The spring sunshine was adding to the home crowd’s enjoyment but it was quickly outshone by some more smart football from Leamington.

Smith was the instigator, with his direct run enhanced by the fleetfooted Bruce who soon had Ruyssevelt on his shoulder in support. Ruyssevelt punched a gap in the Bedworth defence and allowed Thomas the space to power over for a fine team score. Glover once again slotted over the conversion.

Although Bedworth had suffered a torrid afternoon, they did summon up the energy to create an opening, late on, for a try, before Glover completed the afternoon’s proceedings with a touchdown following another Shuttleworth break.
