The event attracted the best masters’ athletes from around the country, many of whom were keen to catch the eye of the selectors ahead of the British and Irish Masters International race later in the year.

The race was a gruelling 6.2k over parkland which included several large waterlogged sections, with driving rain and heavy winds making the going tough for competitors.

Williamson paced herself conservatively over the opening 1k loop before pulling away in the first of two long 2.5k laps, opening up a gap of 30 metres on Jane Clarke (City of Norwich), a previous winner of the event.

She pressed on as the rain became heavier and increased her advantage over the second long lap, finishing in a time of 26min 20sec for 17th overall.

The win followed her victory in the West Worthing 5k the previous weekend where she clocked 19:30.
