Wellesbourne Nursery School has received 'good' ratings across the board after its first inspection.
The Mountford Close nursery, which is part of Wellesbourne Primary School, impressed Ofsted inspectors with the range of activities and level of care it offers for children when it was visited in March.

It received a 'good' verdict, the second highest of four ratings.

Inspector Sheila Flounders' mentioned the children's pride in finding their coat hooks, reading their names and taking extra care and time to finish their Easter bonnets.

She wrote in her report: "Children are cared for in a welcoming, secure and safe environment where they have ample free play space. The rooms are all bright and airy with eye-catching visual displays, with children's own creative work given prominence."

Mrs Flounders praised the wide range of activities to help children learn, including arts and crafts and music.

"Children are interested in what they do because the range of activities on offer each session is sufficiently diverse that they can all find something which captures their attention."

The inspector's only concerns were for some areas of safety after it emerged the nursery had not yet had its first fire drill. There was also uncertainty about whether the school's safety policies applied to younger nursery children.

Nursery manager Barbara Mannion was delighted the nursery had received such a solid report.

She said: "A good rating is what we were hoping for, but we weren't sure we would be there yet because we have only been here nine months."
Mrs Mannion also stressed safety had been improved, with a fire drill since the inspection, and future practices for the nursery and reception classes at least once every term.

Improvements are planned for the nursery garden, and staff hope to improve standards in outside sports with a tennis coach visiting the nursery to begin ball skills.

Mrs Mannion added: "We hope we might be able to get an outstanding rating at our next inspection.

"I can't see why that is not possible. We have got to this standard now and we are improving every week."
