Alan Carr at the Spa Centre, Leamington September 27.
Stand-up comedy these days often tends toward a confrontational, occasionally cruel and slightly unnerving tone.

Anyone who even slightly stands out or who has the misfortune of sitting in the beady gaze of the comic has to watch out. For those of us who don’t consider being publically humiliated the highlight of a great night out, this can put a bit of a damper on things.

But when camp, innuendo-queen Alan Carr came to the Spa Centre the audience was able to sit back and enjoy some good, old-fashioned without the fear of being picked on.

Almost.

His comedy is not the most technical nor contemporary and relies heavily on his well-known gap-toothed persona, much-loved from shows like the Friday Night Project and Eight out of Ten Cats.

But the packed-out Spa Centre roared with laughter through all of the hour-and-a-half-long set.

Carr discussed such episodes as ending up in bed with ‘mingers’ who resemble a Silent Witness cast member when the sheet gets pulled back and encounters with his affectionately named neighbour ‘scally Karen’.

Heckling from audience members raised concerns about some of Leamington’s more dubious sexual practices but the comedian didn’t need to be anything but his naturally hilarious, self-depracating and lovable self.
