A ‘coming of age’ story that has captivated children over the past century will be performed on stage by young actors in Warwick this summer.
Playbox youth theatre company are beginning their new three-year musicals project with their production of The Secret Garden, based on the classic 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The well-known tale sees Mary, an 11-year-old living in British India, forced to go home by tragedy. She finds herself in Yorkshire on the estate of her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven. The story unfolds as a mixture of love, surprise and rebirth in which the power of nature gives way to miracle and magic.
Head of Playbox’s musical theatre Juliet Vankay directs a cast of 34 in this production, led by 11-year-old Olivia Hass playing Mary Lennox.
A Playbox spokesperson said: “Our musical theatre work has gone from strength to strength and our young artists making a huge impact. Tasha Chapple from Playbox is currently one of the ‘Matildas’ in the West End, so you see the calibre of artist we are training.
“The Secret Garden is the first in our planned annual summer musicals to include popular, iconic and not so well known works from the vast musical theatre collection.”
The show runs at the Dream Factory in Tapping Way, Warwick, August 27 to 29 at 7.30pm and August 30 and 31 at 3pm. Tickets £12 (£8 concessions). Call 419555 or visit www.playboxtheatre.com
