Leamington - get ready to boogie

SHANE Richie’s hit West End show and some of the most popular tunes of the 1970s are being brought to a Leamington stage by amateur dramatics group the Spa Theatre Company.

Boogie Nights, the 70s Musical, will be on at the Spa Centre in Newbold Terrace from Tuesday until Saturday November 24.

With a score featuring classics such as Sugar Baby Love, Disco Inferno and Boogie Wonderland, members of the company promise to bring energy and vibrancy to the stage with non-stop dancing, drama and “cheeky” humour.

Director Rob Kemp said: “Boogie Nights, the 70s Musical is a heartwarming celebration of everything 70s - but there is also a darker side to the story as we follow the main character, Roddy and his relationship with his girlfriend, family and friends.”

The backdrop to Roddy’s story is the Boogie Nights nightclub, with its resident DJ and band, together with Choppers, stacked heels - and an Elvis fan thrown in for good measure.

Roddy is a rock star wannabe whose carefree life is about to be turned upside down. He is too busy dreaming of being a rock star to get a job and his girlfriend Debs and Elvis-mad dad Eamon are losing patience - fast.

Their friends Trish and Terry have got the sort of relationship that Debs wants, but Roddy has other ideas.

The company are dedicating the Friday performance to the Leamington Rehabilitation Hospital’s fundraising appeal for its Neuro Rehabilitation Centre. Staff from the hospital will be at the show and available to speak about the centre’s work and the appeal.

The Spa Theatre Company was founded in 1981 and at the time was one of the first groups in the area to offer children and young people the opportunity to learn new skills and develop their talents in the performing arts. Ten years later, the group was so successful that it opened out to adults as well and has been running a performance every year ever since.
