‘Magical’ mixed media art comes to Kenilworth

Chris R Saunderson, who spent his childhood and academic life in South Africa, is now based in the Warwickshire town and is bringing a selection of his watercolour and acrylic paintings to the Talisman Theatre and Arts Centre in the latest exhibition run by arts organisation Brink.

Brink’s co-founder Tim Robottom said: “Using an unusual mixed media technique, Chris creates a subtle depth-of-field in these works that delicately combines an almost impressionistic style with incredibly fine detail that is usually associated with photo-realism.

“As a result, the chosen subject seems to emerge from the haze of the heat, the cold mist or the dust blown up by the wind, in an almost magical way.”

Chris discovered his love of the natural world through his regular walks over the open veldt behind the family home during his childhood, as well as through trips to the Kruger National Park.

He attended Johannesburg School of Art before starting a career in advertising, firstly in Johannesburg and later in Coventry and Birmingham.

After a period working freelance from his studio in Kenilworth, Chris took his retirement and now concentrates on painting landscapes and wildlife.

The exhibition is open from 7pm on show nights and from 8pm on non-show Fridays until the end of January. Entry is free and the bar will also be open.
