Play aims to challenge views on Richard III

A fresh telling of the story of Richard III comes to Eathorpe and Warwick next week.

Uncle Richard is written by Leamington playwright ES Cooper and presented by award-winning company Tell Tale Theatre.

And with this month marking a year since the of the remains of the much-maligned king were interred at Leicester Cathedral, the playwright is keen for the audience to see the murderous monarch’s life in a new light.

She said: “Our new play tries to present a little of all the theories about the fate of the princes in the tower so that the audience can make up their own minds.

“The chroniclers from the time are just as biased as the modern media and in many cases even more sensational so it is very hard for us to find the truth now. I just wonder what Shakespeare would have written had he known what we know now.”

Director Taresh Solanki said: “What struck me on reading the script was how accessible the history is - and how much fun!

“It all boils down to family loyalties and conflict - brothers betraying brothers, strong minded mothers, competing cousins, arranged marriages and unpopular in-laws, everyone can relate to that.”

Uncle Richard is being performed at Eathorpe Village Hall on Wednesday at 7.30pm and at Warwick Quaker Meeting House on Thursday at 7.30pm.
