A repeated drug dealer who was still on licence from his last prison sentence when he was caught selling heroin and crack cocaine in Leamington for the second time is back in jail.

Janade Tariq pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to possessing heroin and crack with intent to supply, and his driver Arman Ali admitted being concerned in the supply of the drugs.

Tariq (27) of Wash Lane, Yardley, Birmingham, who had two previous similar conviction, was jailed for five years and eight months.

But sentence on Ali (22) of Brickhouse Lane, West Bromwich, was adjourned for a report to be prepared on him and for the prosecution to consider the basis of his pleas.

Prosecutor Simon Hunka said that on March 15 the two defendants were seen in Leamington in a Renault Clio, with Ali driving and Tariq in the front passenger seat.

A known drug-user approached the passenger window, and an exchange was seen to take place before he walked away and the car drove off.

A little later police officers found the Clio parked in St Mary’s Road, with Ali alone in it, and he was arrested.

The officers searched the area, where they knew drug-dealing took place from time-to-time, and as they walked down an alleyway they saw Tariq walking back towards the car.

When he saw them, Tariq turned and ran, throwing away four packages as he did so, but was caught and arrested.

The officers recovered the packages which were found to contain 63 wraps of heroin and 92 wraps of crack, worth a total of £1,550 in street deals.

Tariq had £2,595 in cash on him, and a further £4,000 was found in the glove compartment of the car – and Recorder Balraj Bhatia QC ordered all the cash to be forfeited under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Messages on phones seized from the two men showed that Ali had been assisting Tariq by driving him around, knowing he was dealing – although Tariq denied doing so when he was interviewed.

Mr Hunka added that Tariq had been jailed for two years in 2014 for possessing heroin and cocaine with intent.

And in January 2019 he was jailed for four years after being stopped in a car in Sydenham Drive, Leamington, with £1,300 worth of heroin and crack.

So as a ‘third strike’ dealer, he was facing a seven-year minimum sentence before being given credit for his plea.

And Balbir Singh, for Tariq, conceded: “There can be no other sentence.”

Jailing Tariq, Recorder Bhatia told him: “Your convictions leave me no choice, because Parliament has decreed that a minimum sentence applies.

“It is called the three-strikes rule, which shows how seriously Parliament takes dealing in class A drugs, and you [were] prepared to carry on even if it means longer and longer sentences.”

And granting Ali bail, Recorder Bhatia warned him: “I make it plain adjourning your case is no indication as to the eventual sentence.”
