Leamington’s Pump Room is inviting people to step back to the 19th century and celebrate its bicentenary at a Regency Ball.

As well as music by the Green Ginger Players from the era - 1811 to 1820, when the Prince Regent was on the throne - the event will include period dancing, guided by caller Diana Campbell and a Regency-inspired supper.

The evening, which takes place on Friday June 27, has been organised by Leamington Art Gallery and Leamington group Heritage Matters as part of its annual history festival.

The gallery’s senior curator Vicki Slade said: “In 1964 the town celebrated the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Royal Pump Rooms with a spectacular Regency Ball.

“It seems only right that we mark the 200th anniversary with an equally grand event. The ball will provide a fantastic opportunity to dress up, have a dance and experience the Royal Pump Rooms as people would have done when the building first opened 200 years ago.”

Guests will be encouraged to dress in Regency-style outfits. The Regency period was characterised by distinctive trends in British architecture, literature, fashions, politics, and culture - and many of Leamington’s most distinctive buildings retain the Regency character.

Tickets to the ball, which opens at 7.30pm and finishes at 11pm, cost £40. To book, call 742700 or visit www.warwickdc.gov.uk
