Kenilworth twins pedal to four corners of UK in grandfather's memory

Victoria and Emma Kempton, both 19, covered over 1,400 miles on their journey to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society after their grandfather, Douglas, died after suffering from vascular dementia for a number of years.

They started at Land’s End, headed east to Margate, rode north to Cape Wrath in Scotland, and finally ventured west to finish in John O’Groats.

Victoria said: “We were very tired when we finished, but also relieved and very happy.”

The twins were inspired to cycle for the charity in Douglas’s memory after they and the rest of their family had to look after him during his later years.

While not complete novices when it came to cycling, they had only ridden for short commutes rather than for any significant distances.

They had completed a Lands End to John O’Groats ride two years ago with the help of their mother, Jane, but this time they wanted to increase the difficulty.

Their journey was not without its complications. Both women suffered several punctures and Emma fell off her bike into a river in Scotland while attempting to cross it at a ford.

However, they said they both enjoyed the ‘beautiful’ countryside along the way and even found time to race a tractor towards the end of their journey.
