'˜Landmark moment' as Warwick district's Local Plan gets Government approval

Warwick district's Local Plan, which will shape the development of the district for the next 12 years, has finally been approved by the Government.

A Government Planning Inspector has given the revised version of the plan the green light, which will bring around 13,000 new homes to the district by 2029.

The council is expected to formally adopt it into its planning policy on Wednesday September 20.

Warwick District Council’s leader Cllr Andrew Mobbs said: “This is a landmark moment for our district. Once the Local Plan is adopted we will have the strong framework we need to secure our future prosperity and protect our built and rural environment.

“I’m aware the plan hasn’t been without controversy, but I genuinely believe that we can now look forward with confidence and optimism.”

16,776 homes are included in the plan, of which around 13,000 will be new as some have already been built since 2011. 5,000 of these new homes will be ‘affordable’, defined by government as houses with mortgage repayments below the local market value.

1,210 homes and a new secondary and primary school will be built on land west of Europa Way, and 1,605 homes as well as two primary schools will be built south of Harbury Lane.

500 homes are also earmarked for land to the east of Whitnash and 59 are set for Hazlemere and Little Acre.

A site at King’s Hill to the north of Kenilworth will include 1,800 houses and provision for new secondary and primary schools - with a capacity for up to almost 4,000 beyond 2029. And land at Westwood Heath will include 425 houses.

Land near Thickthorn in Kenilworth is set for 760 houses and a primary school, while land off Crewe Lane will include 640 houses and a new site for Kenilworth School and Sixth Form. The two old sites will have 250 and 130 homes built on it respectively.

There will also be 100 homes to the east of Warwick Road south of St John’s gyratory, and 93 homes at Crackley Triangle, which permission has already been granted for.

Sites at the Asps and Gallows Hill to the south of Warwick and Leamington include 900 and 630 houses respectively and a new primary school.

A site off Montague Road in Warwick will have 140 homes, Riverside House in Leamington will have 100, Court Street will have 75, and Theatre Street will have 39.

Sites in villages include 115 houses at the former Warwickshire Police HQ in Leek Wootton, 100 houses on land north of Cubbington, 80 houses on land north of Rosswood Farm in Baginton, 65 houses in Barford, 50 houses in Bishop’s Tachbrook and 90 houses in Burrow Hill Nursery at Burton Green.

Hampton Magna will get 115 and 130 houses on land south of Lloyd Close and south of Arras Boulevard respectively, Hatton Park will have 150 houses to the north of Birmingham Road, Radford Semele will have 60 off Spring Lane, and Kingswood will have 48 new homes.
