New children's home in Kenilworth on its way

The home at 43 Waverley Road, which used to be a veterinary surgery, will house up to four children at one time, and will mainly focus on the care of younger children.

Two adults will usually be in the home at any one time, but sometimes only one adult will be present if they are taking out one of the children out.

Applicant Kate Elliott said: “Our emphasis will be on younger children from six to eight years old on an ongoing basis. However, our work might require us to look after slightly older children.

“All children at 16 must move to independent or supported living and we may be able to prepare them for this eventuality.

“We will help them move forward towards independent or supported living, preparing them for possible apprenticeships or educational opportunities.

“The property is spacious and potentially homely. It has a safe playing area at the back of the property for sports, activities and games, being a safe gated area.

“The building is situated close to educational facilities and community facilities for the benefit and stimulation of the children.”

Kate also said an environmental assessment of the area and a risk assessment of the impact on neighbours was taking place to ensure noise levels did not get too high.

Kenilworth Town Council’s planning committee was neutral to the plans, stating as long as the assessments were positive they had no reason to object.

A Waverley Road resident said: “It’s a good place for a home for looked after children.

“There are many families with children living in the road and therefore they would be among people with an understanding of the needs of children.

“I hope they consider turning part of the current car park at the rear into a proper garden where the children can play safely.”
