Death of swan in Warwick is being investigated

The death of a swan in Warwick is being investigated.

This week residents took to social media concerned about the welfare of the swans in the Chase Meadow area.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have confirmed they retrieved a dead swan from the area.

After being called to the area, DEFRA and the and Plant Health Agency (APHA), which is an agency of DEFRA, said only one dead swan was at the site and that it is.believed that the people who reported the sighting mistook a plastic bag in the water for a second swan.

An Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) spokesperson said: “We are aware of a swan death near Chase Meadow, Warwick. The death is currently under investigation.”

DEFRA have also issued the following advice:

~ Dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, should be reported to the Defra helpline (03459 335577).

~ DEFRA then collect some of these birds and test them to help us understand how the disease is distributed geographically and in different types of bird, not all birds will be collected.

~ Do not touch or pick up any dead or visibly sick birds that you find.
