Kenilworth scout group thanks community for supporting Christmas card delivery service

A scout group in Kenilworth would like to thank the community for its support during the annual Christmas card delivery service.

The 4th Kenilworth Scouts once again held their card delivery service to residents of Kenilworth and Leek Wootton, which they have done for more than 30 years.

This year the group faced uncertainty as to whether the service would be able to go ahead due to the pandemic but were able to again after going through all the assessments.

The service was officially launched on December 5 with post boxes being delivered to businesses that will be acting as weekday collection points. The 4th Kenilworth Scouts also held collection stalls in Talisman Square on December 12 and December 19.

Speaking about this year's service, Nick Schofield, Group Scout Leader, said: "As a team we are so glad that we’ve been well supported this year.

"Although we don’t do an accurate count as there are so many cards, we estimate that we’ve processed 9,000 cards.

"Unfortunately we don’t deliver to California in the US or Edinburgh, so those were conventionally posted.

"We had to change our process this year due to Covid, which meant that we weren’t able to involve as many Scouts and their families as usual.

"But Sunday December 20 was a busy day. 38 rounds were delivered by enthusiastic and excited, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts (under parental supervision).

"This is a tradition dating back to 1982 - the Group has delivered ever since – and we were determined that this covid business wasn’t going to stop us.

"We understand there are around 28 other Scout Groups in England who also provide charitable Christmas post but it seems that we are one of only two or three groups to have gone ahead this year.

"We had some doubts earlier this year as to whether we could go ahead but the Scouts Association kindly approved our Covid risk assessment. So we’ve been able to continue to provide this service to the local communities of Kenilworth and Leek Wootton."

The 4th Kenilworth Scouts would also like to thank Farthing Gallery, GDT Automobiles, Leyes Lane Pharmacy, Kenilworth Books, Steve Crowe Butchers and All Saints Church in Leek Wootton for being collection points.
