Leamington and Warwick Musical Society has marked its forthcoming centenary in May by producing a history of the first 100 years of its existence.

What We Did for Love – The First 100 Years of LWMS is a 112-page, full colour, souvenir brochure written and compiled by former member, performer and director Mark Thorburn.

The Brochure, beautifully illustrated, tells the story of every production from its very first, The Mikado in 1921 up to and including reference to Crazy For You 2020 and Shrek The Musical 2021 both of which were cancelled due to Covid-19.

The society has said: "It not only provides the history of the society but Mark's wealth of knowledge and experience in musical theatre makes it a ‘must read’ for all lovers of the genre and in particular his information on the older shows will ensure that they won’t get forgotten.

"It has taken approximately three years to compile and a lot of fun been had retrieving photographs, programmes and stories from the wealth of information held in the society’s archives and from memories and amusing anecdotes from past and present members all over the country."

The society will continue to celebrate by unveiling a commemorative painting and plaque at the Royal Spa Centre in June when Government restrictions permit, along with holding several other events posted on its website.

The centenary production in April 2022, a year later than planned, is to be Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Evita.

The society is thrilled to have been given the rights to perform this musical masterpiece and looks forward to the challenge.

Auditions are scheduled for July and workshops in June.
