Meet the Warwick district residents who have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List

Residents in the Warwick district have been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

They include the those who helped others during these tough times in a global pandemic.

Here are some of the those that were awarded for their services to the community

NIGEL HAILEY (WARWICK)

Nigel Hailey, the lead volunteer for Warwickshire Scouts, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for his voluntary service to the young people in Warwickshire.

Initially joining Scouts as a youth member in Greater London. Nigel - who lives in Warwick - then moved to Warwickshire in 1982 where he has since held several roles in Scouting. This started at the 8th Leamington Scout Group.

It has included over six years as the UK’s International Commissioner where he represented the UK on the global scouting stage, now he has been the County Commissioner in Warwickshire for the past four years.

For a slice of variety, Nigel has also been involved with the Gang Show (WAGS) on stage, as producer and now supporting the current team. In 2007 he was the deputy director for the World Scout Jamboree held in the UK in 2007 where 40,000 Scouts from across the world camped for 10 days to celebrate 100 years of Scouts.

Nigel has spent the last six months supporting Scouts across the county as it continues to run virtually and, recently, face-to-face meetings in line with current guidelines.

Warwickshire Scouts have been holding online video-conferencing meetings to continue providing young people with an engaging activity programme, for example, by leading a baking tutorial session live from the Scout leader’s kitchen.

5,500 young people enjoy Scouting across the whole county supported by 2,000 adults.

Nigel said: “Scouting has given me so many fantastic opportunities to experience new things, meet fascinating people and to travel to wonderful places around the world.

"This does not happen without being part of a team and I would like to thank everyone who has been part of my journey!”

JUDY OLIVER (STONELEIGH)

A retired magistrate from Stoneleigh has been awarded an MBE in recognition of her judicial and education work.

Judy Oliver JP has served many years in delivering justice across Coventry and Warwickshire and educating young people in a pioneering education workshop.

Judy was put forward for the honour by her colleagues at the Magistrates Association (MA).

She served as a magistrate in court for 14 years, before retiring from the Coventry and Warwickshire Bench and continuing the magistrate workshops in local schools for the MA.

Judy had no idea she was being considered for the Queen’s Birthday Honours and it came as a total shock and surprise.

She said: ”I am overwhelmed and humbled to be given an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen. I am delighted that local justice and our educational work in schools which teaches children about the consequences of criminal activities such as drugs, knife crime and cyber bullying, has been recognised in this incredible way”.

Judy experienced a life changing injury in her 50s which led to her using a wheelchair.

Her determination and commitment to justice involves leading a large citizenship programme in schools benefitting thousands of young people each year.

Every year the Magistrates In the Community project visits over 125 primary classes and educates 10 and 11 year olds on knife and cyber-crime, the consequences of those crimes on victims and society, along with British values and the law, rights and responsibilities and the court system.

Judy undertakes about 70 workshops in schools a year. Each visit consists of a presentation, a discussion and a trial with pupils taking on the different roles and using picture cards to discuss the consequences of the crimes used as examples.

Initially the project delivered around 40 visits a year and under her leadership this has increased threefold to over 120 a year and is still increasing. Over 3,500 young people are educated each year.

The Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire Mr Tim Cox said: “As the Queen’s representative in Warwickshire I am delighted Mrs Oliver has been given this honour for her voluntary work in schools which ensures young people learn about right and wrong, crime and consequences and are equipped with a range of citizenship skills for the rest of their lives”

Judy also sits on a Youth Referral Panel for Coventry Youth Offending Team demonstrating a wider commitment to youth justice and education. Judy was awarded the national ‘Retired Magistrate of the Year’ award in 2017 by the Magistrate Association.

GRAHAM DUXBURY (LEAMINGTON)

Leamington's Graham Duxbury, chief executive for Groundwork UK, received an OBE for services to communities and the environment in the UK.

A spokesperson for Groundwork UK said: “We’re incredibly proud as an organisation that Graham has been recognised by this prestigious honour, which is an indication of the value placed on the work done by the team he leads at Groundwork.

"This work to tackle poverty and protect and improve the environment has never been more important as we address the inequalities highlighted by the pandemic and find practical, community-led solutions to the climate and nature emergencies.”

OTHERS NAMED ON THE LIST

Professor Graham Medley of Leamington - a professor of infectious disease modelling at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has been made an OBE for services to the Covid-19 response.

Roger Wiglesworth, of Warwick, has been made an OBE for voluntary and charitable services.
