As part of ‘National Read Aloud week’, teachers at a primary school near Warwick went above and beyond by purchasing, wrapping and hand delivering more than 200 books to their pupils ahead of a virtual author visit on World Book Day (March 4).

The staff at Budbrooke Primary School purchased ‘Don’t Look In This Book’ from Warwick-based publisher Owlet Press.

Early years children who are already learning on-site at the school have also been creating imaginative displays using the content of the book.

The virtual author visit from author, Sam Langley-Swain will incorporate a reading of the book, advice on writing techniques and answers to questions sent in by the pupils.

“It’s so great to be able to offer virtual events for classes and reconnect with the pupils in these challenging times”, Sam said. “Support from local schools is invaluable and greatly appreciated.”

Having come across this book in previous roles, Budbrooke’s head of literacy Beth List knew the delivery of this book would be 'a playful and exciting disrupt' to the pupils’ home learning routines.

She said: “This book is really unique and so useful in getting children to use their imaginations and write creatively – we felt it was well worth the investment in bringing some book-based joy to the children during lockdown.

"We thought this delivery, with a virtual author visit would give the children a world book day they’d remember for a long time to come.”

Craig McKee, Head Teacher of Budbrooke Primary added: “Miss List has really thought outside the box and done a fantastic job of organising such engaging book week activities that the children will love.

"By 10am I already had started receiving emails from parents telling me how much the children loved their book in the post and were absolutely ‘buzzing’.”
