Restoration of Kenilworth Castle's mere by blocking pipes '˜a risk to life'
Kenilworth town councillor Mike Hitchins wished to warn residents of the dangers in restoring the old castle mere as a solution to recent flooding.
Cllr Hitchins (Con, Park Hill) strongly opposed the blocking of pipes at the Tiltyard embankment dam when speaking at the last town council meeting.
He made it clear that blocking some of the dam’s pipes near Kenilworth Castle would be “a risk to life” due to the large amount of water the dam would hold back.
He said: “I’d be very concerned about blocking the flow of some of the pipes there.
“If there is a blockage there engineers would take it out because it is a risk to life. If the water being held back by the blockage all came out at once it would take houses out.
“I hope everyone is now clear on that.”
The Tiltyard dam was originally built in the 12th and 13th century to hold back water from the castle’s mere.
