Southam United's miserable run continued at Banbury Road on Tuesday night when a first-half hat-trick from Daniel Scragg set up a comfortable win for the visitors, writes David Hucker.

Heath Hayes came into the match on the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Racing Club Warwick at the beginning of the month and Saints, having lost their Saturday fixture against Atherstone Town because of a waterlogged pitch, had also not played since losing at Littleton the week before.

Saints had their chances before Scragg struck his first goal in the 21st minute and he doubled up when a free-kick was only half-cleared by the home defence and his shot from the edge of the box beat Matt Archer.

A long-range effort just before half-time brought up his hat-trick and effectively put the match beyond Saints’ reach.

Southam battled well in the second period but could not apply the finishing touch to several chances until debutant Dan Carter’s fine free-kick in the 89th minute reduced the arrears.

However, Heath Hayes substitute Chris Horton quickly restored the three-goal cushion, powering home a header from a corner in added time.

Saints host fellow strugglers Bolehall Swifts in a bottom-of-the-table clash at Banbury Road on Saturday (3pm) before third-placed Nuneaton Griff are the visitors on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).
