Nigel Murray MBE admits he was “mightily relieved” after Great Britain’s BC1/2 team secured their qualification for the 2016 Paralympic Games with a gold medal-winning display at the European Team and Pairs Championships in Surrey.
Winning the event, which comprised the top eight ranked European countries, gave Britain automatic qualification for Rio, thus avoiding them having to travel to Colombia for the World Open in search of further ranking points.
“I’m mightily relieved,” said Murray, 51, who confirmed he will definitely bring the curtain down on his illustrious career in Rio. “The prospect of 20 hours on a plane is not a good one at my age.”
Murray will have to wait to see if he gains selection for the final team, but the double Paralympic gold medallist says he is optimistic.
“I’m still holding my own and enjoying it,” said the world number seven.
