Local bragging rights for Page at the Warwick Half

Kenilworth Runners’ Stephen Page was the leading local runner at the British Heart Foundation Warwick Half Marathon on Sunday.

The hilly course took the runners through the town, out along the Coventry Road to Leek Wootton and then through Beausale and past Hatton Park before going into Hampton-on-the-Hill to finish back at Warwick Racecourse.

In near-perfect conditions, Runners’ men’s captain Page pipped Leamington C&AC’s Jamie Langley in a sprint finish to claim fourth place in 1hr 15min 42sec, with Langley three seconds back in fifth.

Victor Garanto was the highest-placed Spa Strider, finishing ninth in 1:17:34.

Fellow Strider Paul Edwards continued his fine form to finish 24th in a new personal best time of 1:21:14.

Kenilworth Runners’ Jim Richardson finished 20th in a PB of 1:20:51, with Alex Atkinson 32nd in 1:22:55.

There were also PBs for Runners’ Wayne Briggs (1:24:11), Nathan Green (1:24:19), Vassilis Andreoulakis (1:28:35), Simon Corley (1:26:38) who was first V50 and Martin Belcher (1st V60 in 1:37:31).

Leamington C&AC’s Eoin O’Flynn was 18th in 1:20:41, closely followed by Matt Butler in 23rd in 1:21:11.

Clubmate John Knibb was ten places further back in 83:38.

Garreth Schule came in 43rd, recording 1:24:36 while Brian Miller, in his first road race of the year following an injury problem, just managed to finish inside the top 100 with 1:28:40.

The race was won by Stratford AC’s Richard Shephard in 1:13:41.

In the ladies’ race, Sue Harrison, running her second event of the year, declared herself satisfied to finish second lady and 36th overall in 1:24:21 some 40 seconds faster than she had targeted and more than a minute faster than the previous course record.

Angela Chahal was 131st overall in 1:31:35, with Anouk Molliex (1:34:57)and Jenny Jeeves (1:39:49) also producing impressive runs for Leamington.

Charlotte Everard was Spa Striders’ first lady home in 1:34:30, with Bethan Gwynn 228th overall in 1:37:08, while Laura Pettifer (1:36:51), Gemma Ellis (1:37:59) and Jenny Philpott (1:38:52) produced PBs for Kenilworth.

Knowle & Dorridge’s Jane Evans won the ladies’ race in a course record 1:17:31 and there were 1,656 finishers.
