Denis Ward’s rink struggled in the heavy conditions and went down by eight shots to leave Byfield six-shot winners.

It was a totally different picture the next day when the men opened their Courier League campaign with a convincing 95-40 win at Snitterfield.

Dave Cooke’s rink won 32-13 with Denis Ward’s rink romping to a 39-5 success. Ted Coupe completed the clean sweep with a hard-fought 24 -22 success.

Southam are holding open days on May 15 and 22.

The rout was led by David Payne, Mike Brayne, John Rheams and Ray White who won 38-8 and Malcolm Wickens, Phil Lennon, Chris Tarrant and Dick Allibon who eased to a 32-8 success.

On the other three rinks, Mike Wallace won 25-12 and Bill Griffin came out on top 25-22 while Jerry Horne lost 24-17.

Home Guard claimed a resounding 69-45 win in the first leg of their annual triples fixture with Warwick Police at Victoria Park.

Captain Les Woodfield led his rink to a ten-shot win, with Dave Ballard (9 shots) and Bernard Fisher (5 shots) also successful and Fred Sawyer gaining a draw.

Lillington went down to a 96-75 defeat at Coventry Avenue in their five-rink match.

The visitors had two winning rinks, with John Buggins skipping Mick Russell, B Mann and Ray Mace to a 19-shot winning margin and Malcolm Welch claiming victory by four shots.

Avenue’s men were trailing 39-22 at Norgren when their three-rink triples match had to be abandoned due to heavy rain.

The deficit would have been even greater had Ron Walton not played a weighted shot to reduce a eight bowl head for the home team to only one.

Avenue proved too strong for hosts Snitterfield, winning all five mixed rinks. The highest winning rink was skipped by Phil Wadland (26-10).
