Craig David is preparing to create the Midlands’ biggest house party when he lands in Coventry next month.
The Seven Days and Fill Me In star is bringing his Following My Intuition Tour to the Ricoh Arena’s Ericsson Indoor Arena on Saturday April 8.
After originally shooting to fame at the turn of the century, David returned to the limelight last year with his sixth album Following My Intuition which went to number one in the UK album charts, while tracks such as When The Bassline Drops and Nothing Like This achieved top ten status in the UK singles chart.
The singer-songwriter has also spent the past year playing house-party style DJ sets around the globe – known as TS5 and named after the district of David’s neighbourhood in Miami where the idea was born.
David says he will be incorporating both the live band and TS5 into his Coventry performance, and after taking a year out to do his own sets, is currently rehearsing with his band for the arena tour.
Ahead of his gig in Coventry, David was keen to offer some advice to his fans.
He said: “Put some comfortable shoes on, because it’s going to be one of those nights where I want it to feel like one oversized house party. There will be a lot of new tunes and moments of nostalgia but at the same time it’ll be fresh with the TS5 element, which will allow me to cater to the crowd that’s there.
“I’ve performed in Coventry in the past and whenever I have been up the crowd has been so hyped. Sometimes down south because there’s a lot of established acts on rotation the reaction is a bit calmer, but as soon as you go further up north the reception is incredible.
“I want to combine both the live band and TS5 together during my performance. The live band is important because I always want to make sure that my songs are played in a way that doesn’t stray too far away from what the original song sounds like on the album.
“The TS5 element is where I can flex and freestyle – it might be that I play a Dr Dre track and then suddenly the band pick it up and carry on playing it from there, which is exciting because it brings the whole crowd into it.
“The TS5 part has really taken off. It literally started just as a house party that I was putting on and it kept building every week. I always wanted to be that host where everyone came in and felt like a VIP, there was no red ropes situation that I got a bored of seeing in clubs.
“I’ll definitely be mixing up my songs. Rewind and Fill Me In tend to capture a moment from people that grew up in that time, and associate it with when they were at school or going through university. Then again, other songs such as Nothing Like This and When The Bassline Drops are the go-to tunes for the younger generations.”
As for any pre-performance preparations, David revealed a simple good night’s sleep does the job.
“My shows are full on and at this point in my life I want to be 100 per cent every time, so I’ll probably prepare by getting an early night!”
