Fake of Jake with Warwick Folk

WARWICK Folk Club are bringing to life the songs of a man widely regarded as one of the greatest comedy songwriters of the last 50 years.

As Jake Thackray died 11 years ago, it was not possible for the club to host a live performance by the man himself - but they are still keen on sharing his music.

Playing as Fake Thackray, John Watterson was born on and grew up on the Isle of Man, which is where he first saw and met Jake in 1974.

When Jake died in 2002, John set about learning more of his songs than he knew already. He said: “Before I had decided what to do when I grew up, it was time for my mid-life crisis. I told my wife Carol that I wanted to give up the day job and sing Jake’s songs and she said, ‘OK then’ - so I did!”

Having just been on tour with Fairport Convention - which included a show at the Spa Centre in Leamington a few weeks ago - John is enjoying every moment of performing.

Club members say audiences should not expect a ‘sound-alike’ as John’s versions of Jake’s songs are not intended as imitations.

Singer and member Norman Wheatley will open the club night, which takes place at the Warwick Arms Hotel in High Street, Warwick, on Monday March 11 from 8pm. Tickets cost £8. For further details, go online.
