Polished pop? Not us, say Funeral For A Friend ahead of Coventry gig

A more ‘grown-up’ sound which still harks back to its south Wales hardcore roots can be expected from the 2013 line-up of Funeral For A Friend.

So says the band’s lead-vocalist Matt Davies-Kreye, one of the two original members - along with Kris Coombs-Roberts - who formed the group 12 years ago.

The current band are playing at the Kasbah in Coventry this weekend, where fans can expect to hear tracks from their new album, Conduit.

Speaking to the Courier ahead of the show, Matt said the album draws on the band’s original sound, but is more up to date with where he, Kris and fellow members Pat Lundy, Gavin Burrough and Richard Boucher are now.

He said: “The playability and technicality in the way we play now is a lot tighter and more focused.

“We still have the melody and the emotional core, but if you come in looking for a clean, polished pop experience, you might be disappointed.”

The change, says Matt, is natural. “When we started, I didn’t know anything about politics or the world around me - all I knew was what was in my own little bubble.

“Meeting people who share passionate beliefs in certain things has shaped my changes.

“We have been band for 12 years, so things change.”

The gig at the Kasbah is on Saturday. Over-18s only. Tickets £5. www.kasbahnightclub.com
