Review: Passionate and fun jazz band have something for everyone

Nothing is predictable about the tunes performed from this harmonious melting pot of an album by Leamington jazz band Interplay.

The clue is in the name: Global includes hip-shaking samba, New York brass, rousing Indian tabla beats and much more. We know that the sounds and influences are to come from all over the world - yet there is not, as is often the way with bands, a stamp to show a particular style to pin to Interplay. There is something for everyone here and plenty of contrasts as we move through the evening from track to track.

Introduced warmly by former Trinity assistant headteacher and well-known musician himself, Stephen Steinhaus, the band bring exhuberance and an instant atmosphere of fun (helped by band founder Adrian Litvinoff’s cracking Hawaiian shirt) to the very intimate LAMP. The room is jam-packed and more people keep cramming in as the night goes on. It’s all informal and friendly and a feel-good night.
