The hunt is on for a Polish Romeo in Warwickshire drama

A YOUNG Polish or Polish-speaking aspiring actor can take up his chance to shine in a Royal Shakespeare Company project at a Warwickshire stage.

A rather unusual production of Romeo and Juliet - where 20 per cent of the play will be in Polish - will be presented to audiences at Rugby Theatre in May as the venue takes part in the RSC’s Open Stages venture.

In this bi-lingual production, the Montagues are Polish and the Capulets are English - but the role of Romeo has not yet been cast. Director Robert Sloan said: “Rehearsals begin at the end of February - we just need to find our Polish Romeo and then we are set to go, I am sure he is out there somewhere.”

He is keen to hear from anyone who is Polish, can speak English and is between the age of 16 and 25.

The rest of the play has been cast, including Monika Rozanski as Lady Montague from BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio’s Poles Apart and Jakub Kaczmarek, a young Polish man, who will be taking on the role of Balthasar, while Philippa Cottle is playing the title role of Juliet.

RSC Open Stages aims to embrace, develop and celebrate amateur theatre and has expressed an interest in holding a workshop with the cast.
