New way to straighten teeth without having metal brace

Visitors will be shown around the centre in Clarendon Avenue, which has invested more than £1 million in specialist equipment, and will see a range of cosmetic techniques, including teeth whitening and invisible teeth-straightening braces.

Dentist Rob Morgan, who also lectures in dentistry at Birmingham University, said the star of the show would be Invisalign, an innovative procedure developed in the United States for straightening crooked teeth without using unsightly braces.

He said: “The revolutionary procedure involves a series of custom-made ‘invisible’ aligners that gradually move the teeth in a controlled way.

“It is perfect for those who are looking to improve the appearance of their teeth without the use of traditional metal braces.”

Visitors will also see how virtual 3-D imaging is used to show the patient how their teeth will gradually assume their new position, stage by stage.

Each aligner is replaced every two weeks as the teeth gradually straighten and treatment takes between six months and a year.

Three million people worldwide have now been treated with Invisalign.

“It is well known that a good set of straight, white teeth and a healthy smile significantly improves a patient’s confidence and self-esteem,” said Mr Morgan.

Orthodontics, or the movement of badly aligned teeth to the correct position, is one of the fastest growing sectors in UK dentistry.

It is estimated that more than 17 million patients in the UK would benefit from orthodontics and an increasing number of people desire clear or invisible appliances.
