Plans to convert a Kenilworth pub into apartments have been drawn up again

A previous scheme for the building was withdrawn last month

Plans to convert a Kenilworth pub into apartments have been resubmitted to Warwick District Council planners after a previous scheme for the building was withdrawn last month.

Leamington-based Esprit Homes Construction wants to convert the Earl Clarendon, at 127 Warwick Road into four one-bedroom apartments.

Access to the six-space car park would be via the existing private access drive between 131 and 135 Warwick Road and through the rear car park of an existing apartment building and the rooms would be located within the former pub.

The Earl Clarendon closed in February last year and although Kenilworth’s local plan seeks to protect community assets, a planning statement drawn up by consultants Cerda Planning Limited lists three other pubs within 400 metres and two more which are a short walk or cycle ride away.

The report adds: “The change of use would allow the existing redundant building to be converted to an active use providing homes. The development would contribute to Warwickshire’s housing need by using previously developed land and by providing a density suitable for the central location.

This ensures the development contributes to the housing need without damaging greenfield sites and other environmental factors.”

Members of the public can have their say on the plans on Warwick District Council’s planning portal (application number W/20/0629) until Tuesday, June 2.
