Stroke support group holds showcase event

STROKE survivors have attended an open morning for a new group which provides help and support for people in Leamington and Warwick.

The Warwick and Leamington Stroke Support Group invited Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White and Leamington mayor Cllr Alan Wilkinson to its event at the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre last week.

The group is organised by Jane Malone, who was temporarily paralysed down her right side when she suffered a stroke and heart attack six years ago.

Mrs Malone, who has since made a good recovery and has returned to work part-time, said: “So many people out there who have had strokes may have lost their confidence but they can come here and have a chat and a coffee.

“It is a social club for people who have had strokes and their carers where they can speak about different things.

“It’s not melancholy, we have a laugh.”

The group, which has about ten members, was set up by the Stroke Association through funding by Warwickshire County Council with the aim of it being volunteer-run and self-sustainable.

It meets at the Shrubland Street centre fortnightly on Fridays from 10am to noon.

Isabella Watson had a stroke two years ago and joined the group when it formed in February.

She said: “The group has given me the opportunity to talk to other stroke survivors for the first time since my stroke.

“I’ve met some wonderful people and it’s great to share and receive advice and support from people who understand exactly what I’ve been through.”
