Many town workers were stranded on Friday evening when Rugby’s busmen called a two-hour strike in protest against the new Road Traffic Act. Reason for the dispute is that drivers and conductors are now classed as one, which prevents drivers doing overtime as conductors. All overtime has been banned.

Grant aid for the Percival Guildhouse, Rugby’s adult education centre, has been cut to a record low of only £16,000 it emerged this week. Spokesman for the centre in St Matthews Street, Harry Batchelor said: “We will have to look at the number of classes we can afford to run and-or examine the fee structure. We must draw in our horns.”

He said the issues would be debated by the executive next week. For the current session, the Guildhouse offered 57 courses ranging from Planning a Healthy Lifestyle to Styles in Fine Art.
