Help turn the screw on plate thieves

Motorists are being encouraged to turn the screw on thieves who target number plates – by securing them with screws that can’t be unscrewed.

West Midlands Police are working in conjunction with Listers Toyota, Lexus, Volkswagen, Audi, Hyundai, SEAT and Avonvale Honda Dealerships in the West Midlands with the idea to offer drivers free anti-theft screws to fit their registration number plates.

Drivers can make an appointment at Listers dealerships, to have the ingenious screws fitted free. To contact your local Listers dealership please visit listers.co.uk/Contact/NearestDealership

PC Jamie Munro said: “Number plates are easy to steal; once stolen they’re often affixed to other vehicles which are then used to facilitate crime, especially driving off from petrol stations without paying.

“And with fuel prices increasing we expect this type of crime to increase, and with it the demand for stolen registration plates.”

Last year there were more than 2,000 number plate thefts across the West Midlands.

PC Jamie Munro, added: “Victims are left with the inconvenience and cost of replacing the plates. However, prevention is easy and we hope lots of motorists take advantage of the chance to get the anti-theft screws fitted free of charge.”
