Animal art inspires youngsters

CHILDREN from Sydenham and Lighthorne Heath primary schools have created artworks inspired by a painting in the National Gallery, that a proud head teacher describes as “stunning”.

The federated schools are participating in the London gallery’s “Take One Picture” initiative, in which one of its paintings is selected “as a focus for cross-curricular teaching and learning”.

After being given a guided tour of the gallery by art experts, the children took a close look at a 1567 painting by Paulo Veronese titled “The Family of Darius Before Alexander”.

The sessions included “hot seating”, in which the children role-played characters from the painting, but Sydenham’s executive head teacher Juliette Westwood said: “What the children really responded to were the animals. We feel really proud of the work that the children and their parents have produced, which is just beautiful.”

The school was among 16 selected nationally to participate in the project. In January they will find out whether or not they will have their art selected for display.
