Armed men attempt robbery at Ryton pub

ARMED men were thwarted in their attempt to steal cash from a pub in Ryton in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The two men, one wearing a balaclava and holding a wooden handled axe and the other an Asian who was carrying a large silver cleaver knife, forced their way into the Blacksmiths Arms in High Street at about 12.35am.

The raiders were confronted by two men, one of whom suffered a slight cut to his arm, before they made off on foot.

The injured man did not require hospital treatment and nothing was stolen.
