Bishops Itchington villagers come together to help elderly victim of a telephone scam

Tom Edwards fell victim to a telephone credit card scam at the worst possible time.

But when the residents of Bishops Itchington heard of his plight, they decided to do something to help their fellow villager.

And so far, business and individuals have given generously to help tie him over.

The Co-op in Chapel Street has led the fundraising with members of staff making donations.

And the shop has become the focal point for others to make their contributions.

News soon spread and despite not knowing Mr Edwards, Selena and Brian Ogden, the landlady and landlord of the Butchers Arms in Fisher Road, allowed a collection to be held at the pub to which customers donated more than £180 in just three days.

Members of the village’s Bishops Itchington Community Facebook page have appealed for people to make a donation and have been keeping each other up to date with any progress.

Jenny Smedley said: “This is an awful thing to happen at the best of times but particularly cruel at Christmas time when expenses are higher.

“If you would like to contribute, please go in to the Co-op to make a donation.

“It is surprising how a little will mount up and help Tom. Help this village look after its own.”

And on Tuesday, Kate Williams added: “Thank you to those who donated money at The Butcher’s Arms for Tom Edwards. He was extremely grateful and passes on his thanks.”
