After the hearing Cllr Bromley said she was far from happy with the outcome but had to take the advice of her solicitor John Hathaway.

She said: “I will apologise but what I also want to do is publicise how councillors are being treated - particularly if, like me, they dare to speak out.

“How much is all this costing the public purse just for the sake of blackening my name and a few apologies?”

One of the complaints against Cllr Bromley was that she went behind the back of officers to talk directly to ADT, the contractors working on lighting in St Nicholas Park.

She said: “I am a member of the Friends of St Nicholas Park and as a group we wanted to see surveillance cameras in Myton Fields to protect the hundreds of schoolchildren crossing St Nicholas Park - and to protect the residents from the horrendous anti-social behaviour and criminal damage going on.

“This took place both on the banks of the river and also involved cars racing in the park. These had always gone by the time police arrived and so did not go on any records.

“All I wanted to do was stand up for local residents.

“I tried not to step on anybody’s toes but apparently I did and so must apologise for that.”

The hearing panel, made up of Cllr Bromley’s fellow councillors and guided by an independent advisor, agreed with the findings of investigating officer Peter Oliver, who said the councillor failed to adhere to the code in respect to three complaints.
