Faster care for the critically ill

CRITICALLY ill patients in Warwickshire can now be treated at the University Hospital in Coventry rather than having to be transferred further afield.

The hospital is now one of three new trauma centres in the West Midlands as part of a new system that has been estimated to be able to save between 45 and 60 lives a year in the region. The move means that there will from now on always be a consultant doctor on site, whereas before they were often on call.

Dr Matthew Wyse, consultant anaesthetist and clinical lead for the Major Trauma Service at University Hosptals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, said: “We are fortunate that we have effectively been working as the major trauma centre for several years.

“We can now continue this work with others to ensure all trauma patients receive the high quality care they need which can be the difference between life and death.”
